If your garage looks similar to the photo at the left, you know you’re not getting as much as you could from your Davie real estate! Besides that, no one likes to open the garage door after a long day at work to a messy garage. If you haven’t looked into garage makeover alternatives lately, you may be surprised to learn that you can make your garage a place you’re glad to park or play in.
Makeover No 1: The Walls and Floor
With any luck, the walls of your garage were finished with drywall. If not, that’s the place to start. It gives the garage the potential for looking like it should be something attached to your home.
After the walls, the next thing to tackle is the floor. Bare cement is usually unsightly and stains easily. Today, a number of coatings and coverings are available to make your garage floor shine.
- Epoxy floors: You can put epoxy coatings over your floors to upgrade the look and functionality of the garage. These floorings come in solid colors and colors with chips in them that give the floor the look of texture.
- Floor Tiles: Floor tiles come in a range of colors and patterns.
Makeover No 2: Organizers
The biggest problem with messy garages is that it’s impossible to find anything. You can change that quite easily with organizers made for garage storage. For example, cabinets are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to meet your storage requirements. They’re typically installed a few inches off the floor to make it easy to sweep or use a hose to clean the floor without needing to go around the cabinets.
If you’d like to do projects around the house, you’d need a work space and other types of organizers such as wall systems where you can hang tools, use tool racks, small baskets and more to keep your hardware and other small items easy to find and reach.
Other organizers are made for hanging your bicycle or kayak. In addition, you can even make use of the area above your head with handy overhead storage and shelving units.
Makeover No 3: Lighting
Most garages don’t have enough lighting to make working in the garage, or even finding things feasible. Many people will install new lighting fixtures to take the garage out of the dark ages. You’ll be surprised how much more welcoming being in the garage will be when the lighting eliminates those creepy dark corners.

Makeover for More Living Space
If you need a bit more space, you could move, or build an additional room or two in your existing home. However, if you don’t like either of those options, consider alternative uses for your garage.
It is possible to convert your entire garage into a home office, a second living area, or a fun play room – and those are only a few ideas.
Other homeowners don’t want to give up their garage altogether, but they realize they can use the space they have more effectively. Many garages are outsized and you can update them to provide space for things like:
- A small corner office
- A workout space
- A place for the gardener in the family
- A music room (often to reduce the sound in the rest of the house!)
Thinking of Moving Instead?
One great way to clean out the garage is just to move. But, most people don’t use that as a garage renovation approach. However, if you’re thinking of putting your home on the market, or you’re looking for a new home in the Davie area, keep in mind that the Teri Arbogast Team is composed of local experts who know the market and provide exceptional service.
