Secret Woods Nature Center Davie FloridaIf you like the outdoors, you’ll love the Secret Woods Nature Center. It is the first nature center built in Broward County, and it’s just minutes away from Davie. Broward County designated the 57-acre site as an Urban Wilderness Area. That means the Center is part of the County’s program to establish a park system of urban areas that will be permanently maintained as wilderness areas.

The Center has many outdoor activities for residents of Davie and the surrounding communities. In addition, visitors from other parts of the country rates it highly on Trip Advisor.

Julia Hall

If you’re looking for a peaceful and rustic place for an event, Julia Hall might just be what you’re looking for. The Hall can seat 75 people, and you’d have access to a fully-equipped kitchen. The open-air amphitheater adjacent to the Hall can accommodate 100 people. You can also rent Butterfly Island, and it would make a lovely setting for an outdoor wedding.

Monarch Interpretive Center

The center is a 2,000 sf facility where you can participate in a number of interactive displays. You’ll also be treated to a safe look at a working beehive, Native American artifacts and videos about the Everglades and more.

Swallowtail Classroom

Do you have a group of children or adults who want to learn more about the environment you see at the Center? The classroom holds 20 people, and the Center staff will customize a presentation to fit your group’s needs and interests.

Butterfly Island

If you love butterflies, you’ll love the butterfly garden. It covers almost an acre filled with different plants that attract the little creatures. You can walk along a 250-foot path through the garden and sit on benches along the way to get a closer look. You may spot monarchs, swallowtails, and a number of other butterfly species you probably won’t see in other places.

Laurel Oak Trail

This trail winds through different habitats, starting with laurel oaks, live oaks and many different types of vegetation. The four bridges will let you walk through a tidal marsh. All along this trail, you’re sure to see birds, crabs, lizards and other forest and swamp dwellers.

New River Trail

This trail is a boardwalk, mostly constructed from recycled plastic lumber.  When you stroll along the 3,200-foot trail, you’ll see three distinct ecosystems, a hardwood forest, tidal marsh, and a tidal marsh area that is completely under water during high tide. Get out your camera – the opportunity for wildlife photography is around every turn.

The Secret Woods Nature Center is an Outstanding Community Resource

Not only can you use the Center as a place to get close to nature, but there are activities you and your family can use for occasional outings. For example, there are programs aimed at 2-4 year olds that let the kids explore their environment and take short nature walks with their parents. Group programs for students of all ages teach about the flora and fauna around the Center.

You can also take advantage of guided nature walks on the weekends. If you’re a music lover, attend the impromptu music jams the fourth Sunday of every month. If you can play, bring your acoustic instrument and join in!

The Secret Woods Nature Center is another one of the things that people love about the Davie area. Are you looking for something different to do? Do you like interactive activities? Are you a frustrated James Bond or Indiana Jones? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you need to explore the Lockbox Escape Room at 8490 W. State Road 84.

What’s an Escape Room?

If you’ve never experienced one, the first thing you need to know is that you’re not really locked in. An Escape Room is simply an activity where a group of people must scour the room they’re in to find clues and solve puzzles to locate the key that will get them out of the room.

The location here in Davie has six different rooms:

  1. Lockbox Timeline. Your group needs to find a way to save the world from a deadly toxin.
  2. CIA Task Force. You and the other members of your CIA team must figure out where you are, why you’re there and how to get out, to beat the famous assassin that put you there in the first place.
  3. Stolen. This room can be customized for your group. In general, the theme is that the group is trying to retrieve something that has been stolen. But, you can customize it for your family, friends or work team. It makes a great team building exercise.
  4. The Principal’s Office. If that phrase makes your heart turn cold, this may be the challenge for you. You’ve been sent to the Principal’s office due to bad behavior. To avoid suspension, you need to determine what lesson the Principal wants you to learn. Great for families.
  5. Gallery Heist. As investigators, you need to prove that the gallery manager is being framed for a theft, find the missing painting and identify the real culprit.
  6. Order of Illusionists. You want to join a group of master magicians. First, you must pass tests that the illusionists have set out for you. If you succeed, you’ll be a lifetime member of the order!

How Does It Work?

All you need to do is reserve a room. When you arrive at the Lockbox Escape Room, the staff will tell you more about your challenge and the rules and strategies that are helpful. If you’re successful, you’ll escape the room. If not, you’ll still escape the room, but you’ll probably want to try it again!

You can book up to eight people per room online. Contact Lockbox Escape for information about larger groups. You’ll need a group of five or more people to book a room for your group only. Groups of four or fewer people may be paired with another group.

People of any age can play, but they suggest a minimum age of 10 years old. The puzzles are too advanced for someone younger than that, and their frustration or inattention will make it difficult for the rest of the group to get the most from the experience. Lockbox Escape Room also hosts corporate team building activities.

Davie Homeowners Can Play Outdoors – Even in January

While the rest of the country is dealing with winter storms, record low temperatures, fires and mudslides, thing have been pretty quiet here in Davie lately. Our mild temperatures give us the chance to continue to enjoy the South Florida outdoors. If you’re a proud owner of Davie real estate, a great place for outdoor fun is Tree Tops Park.

About Tree Tops Park

Tree Tops Park is a natural haven in the middle of the city of Davie. It illustrates the love Davie and Broward County residents have for maintaining the greenspace that make Davie such a special place.  In 1980, the area now devoted to Tree Tops Park was a dairy farm that developers wanted to turn into a golf community. After the County made it a protected area, the park was developed instead.

The Park encompasses 243 acres of land. Approximately 20 acres of that area is restored freshwater marsh that you can access on the 1,000-goot boardwalk. Pine Island Ridge is an archaeological site that covers about 200 acres of land. It is the highest natural elevation in Broward County at 29 feet above sea level.

Equestrian Trails

The South Florida Trail Riders Association helped to develop an extensive network of horse trails. Riders bring their own horses to wander the seven miles of designated trails, some of which are in the Pine Island Ridge area.

Picnic Facilities

When you want to pack a picnic and head to the park, you’ll find picnic tables and grills that are used on a first-come, first-served basis. While you’re setting out the food, the kids can amuse themselves in the playgrounds located in the picnic areas.

In addition, there are five picnic shelters. Two can accommodate 60-90 people, and three hold from 40-60 people. When you are organizing a large gathering, these picnic shelters are perfect. The shelters must be reserved, and there is a small fee that covers water, electricity, picnic tables and grills.

Nature Trails

The park’s live oaks create a beautiful canopy for the nature trails. Three trails are available, including the Live Oak Trail, Seminole Trail and the Pine Ridge Trail. All trails have either a wood-chipped or paved trail bed.

Water Activities

The Marina offers swan and paddleboat rentals on the weekends. The park has 15 acres of lakes and waterways that can be used for boating and fishing. Fishing is permitted from the shore, pier or boats with the required license.

Oak Ridge Hall

Tree Tops Park also has space for business or personal gatherings. The Oak Ridge Hall is a 3,440 square foot building that offers meeting rooms, an outdoor pavilion and a catering kitchen. It has a maximum capacity of 180 people.

Tree Tops Park is just one of the ways you can enjoy the outdoors in Davie. If you’ve never been there, this winter would be a good time to visit!

Things to do in Davie FLIf you love the outdoors – and most people looking at Davie FL homes for sale do – you’ll want to check out the Everglades Day Safari.  It’s fun for the whole family, and it ranks No. 1 on TripAdvisor for outdoor activities in Davie.  In fact, it has a 5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor, based on about 300 reviews!

The Everglades Day Safari is Eco-Certified

If you’re concerned about boatloads of visitors ruining the everglades, never fear.  The Everglades Day Safari is a Florida Society for Ethical Ecotourism (Florida SEE) Gold Certified Ecotour Operator.  This certification isn’t easy to come by.  The Safari hosted two different Florida SEE Assessors who hitched a ride on the full day safari.  The Gold status indicates that the Safari operators go far above what an ecotour company could be expected to do to protect the environment and wildlife.

You can start your tour from several hotels around the Fort Lauderdale area.  But, residents of Davie just need to go to the Flamingo Gardens to be transported to the everglades.

The Full-Day Safari

The full-day Everglades Day Safari runs from approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  It’s a full day of fun and adventure, with a good bit of education thrown in, too.

A well-educated and highly-trained naturalist will guide you during the tour.  You’ll learn a lot about the everglades, and the birds and animals that inhabit it.  Each tour includes transportation to the everglades and an expansive lunch.  Here’s what you’ll see during the day:

The Half-Day Safari

Captain Bob’s Excellent Adventure is a half-day tour that includes an airboat ride in the River of Grass and a Gator Show that brings you safely up close to Florida’s famous alligators.  The Excellent Adventure runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Jai-Alai (pronounced “hi ‘ lie”) is billed as the world’s fastest sport.  Davie residents are less than 10 miles away from live matches of the sport at the Casino at Dania Beach, Florida.

What is Jai-Alai?

Jai-AlaiJai-Alai is a sport that looks a bit like racquetball, but more difficult and faster.  In addition, rather than a paddle, players use a cesta, which is a Spanish word for basket.  It’s a long basket made from reeds, and players use it to catch and return a ball.

The court that is used for play is similar to a racquetball court.  It has three walls; the ball is hurled toward the front wall at speeds close to 200 mph.  The front wall is made of granite, since that is the only material strong enough not to break during play!

The game comes from the Basque Country of Northern Spain, where it was invented almost four centuries ago.  In 1904, the United States first saw Jai-Alai played at the St. Louis World’s Fair.  Today, Jai-Alai is only played in Dallas, Texas and in several locations in Florida.  As you might imagine, it’s a fast moving sport, and you’ll be amazed at how the players use exceptional skill to win their matches.  If you enjoy a game of chance, you can even place bets on the outcomes.

The Casino at Dania Beach

Jai-Alai matches take place at the Casino at Dania Beach.  The facility can seat 5,600 spectators.  You’ll typically be able to attend matches on Wednesday and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.

While you’re there, you can eat casually at the Orange Bear Grill or take advantage of the gourmet buffet at the Luxe.  There are also a number of lounges on the property.  The Casino hosts entertainment for adults, although some entertainment is suitable for kids of all ages.

The Casino offers Las Vegas style play – you can try your hand at one of the 900 slot machines and electronic table games including Blackjack, Roulette and Craps.  The Card Room attracts the more skilled gamers, offering everything from $20 to $10,000 minimum buy-in tables for 3 Card Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold’em games.

Live music and comedy bring many people to Dania Beach.  You’ll find entertainers such as The Coasters and the Johnny Rogers Band, who present a history of rock and roll for all ages.  Comedy acts are also performing, some of which are for ages 21 and up.

Things to do in Davie FLIf you’re planning to purchase one of our lovely Davie FL homes for sale, you might be wondering how you could get involved in the community.  If you already live in Davie, you may be familiar with the Old Davie School facility, but you may not know that it’s more than a museum!

The Museum’s History

The Old Davie School Historial Museum collects, preserves, interprets and educates people about the heritage, culture, and history of the Davie community and western Broward County.  In 1984, the David School Foundation was created to restore the school building.  The Town of Davie, the Broward County School Board, the Davie Historical Association and the Soroptimist International of Davie (a global women’s organization) support the Foundation.

The School was designed by August Geiger, one of Florida’s prominent architects.  It opened in 1918 with approximately 90 students.  Since that time, the school building has been used as a town hall, dance hall and office space.  Today, the property consists of a restored schoolroom in the original schoolhouse building, a renovated Pioneer Home, and two 1912 homes that were brought to the site for display.

The Museum Today

The museum lets you visit the area’s history and agricultural past.  Its artifacts, maps and photographs take you back through the history that formed the community known as The Town of Davie.  Tours are by appointment only.

Public and private schools, groups of homeschoolers and civic organizations often take advantage of the tours.  If you need funding for a tour, ask about the School Board of Broward County’s Supplemental Arts and Sciences Program (SASP) for your area.

As a longtime Davie REALTOR® and resident, I enjoy helping people discover Davie, Florida and all that it has to offer.  This post includes a few news items that will give you a feel for the community and information about Davie’s 4th of July Family Fun Day to help you make holiday plans early!

Special Needs Kids Blossom at Bob Roth’s New River Groves

Bob Roth’s New River Groves has been a landmark in Davie for about 50 years.  The fresh Florida fruit and food stand, located on Griffin Road, is a favorite of locals.  A friend of Roth’s and an amateur gardener, Steven Wain, got the idea to use the space behind the food stand to get special needs kids involved in gardening.

Wain started the group called Horticultural Therapy a couple years ago with a small group of kids from the Broward Academy School for Special Needs.  Today, he works with 25 students from four schools. The kids grow mangoes, papayas, green beans, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, mint and oregano.  They sell their produce at fundraisers and take some home to their families.

The kids love coming to the garden and seeing the results of their efforts.  Teachers are enthusiastic, too. They see the kids increasing their self-confidence, taking responsibility, and learning new things.

Carnival Cruise Lines Love Davie

For the past three years, Carnival Cruise Lines has been building a 44,500 square foot rehearsal studio in Davie. The facility, called Carnival Studios, was completed, and last month more than 500 of Carnival’s performers gathered to rehearse new shows they’ll perform on Carnival’s fleet of 25 cruise ships.

The facility includes eight music studios, five dance studios and offices.  It will act as the creative development hub for Carnival’s entertainment department.  This home base will give them a place to work with top Broadway talent, and headliners from London’s West End and Las Vegas, to name just a few.  They’ll be working on designing innovative new ways to provide shipboard entertainment.

And, I have to believe that the new studio will have a positive impact on Davie’s local economy, too!

Davie-FL.gov Gets a Facelift

If you haven’t visited Davie’s website lately, you’re in for a pleasant surprise.  They gave the site a facelift and it looks great.  You can sign up to be notified about solicitation notices if you want to do business with the city, or information concerning things like special events, sports and general announcements.  You can also sign up for Alerts related to road closures and notices about hurricanes and tropical storms.

There’s a lot of information for Davie residents that you may find useful, such as information about city departments and services, and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department.

Join in for the Town of Davie Independence Day Celebration!

Independence Day is right around the corner.  The town of Davie holds a Family Fun Day on July 4th at Pine Island Park.  There will be special events at the Pine Island Pool throughout the day.  Other activities include rides, craft displays, a petting zoo, face painters, live music and much more! The fireworks display will begin around 9 p.m.

You can also support the Town of Davie clothing, Shoes and Textile Recycling Program by bringing plastic bags to the event and drop them in the recycling truck.  The Program is helping the Town with its commitment to being environmentally friendly, and it helps fund local nonprofits.

Things to do in DavieNeed more things to do in Davie?  Ever wanted to skydive, but were too afraid to try it?  If you feel that way, you’re in touch with this Davie REALTOR®!  But, we’ve all got another shot at it while staying very close to the ground.  A company called iFLY Indoor Skydiving recently opened a location here in Davie.

What is Indoor Skydiving?

Indoor skydiving is made possible with the availability of 60-foot tall vertical wind tunnels.  iFLY has been the leader in designing, building and operating vertical wind tunnels since 1997.  In addition to the over 50 locations worldwide already in existence, the company has another 25 locations under construction.

Vertical wind tunnels are often used to train military paratroopers, and they’re now the basis of a new sport called Bodyflight.  The instructors at iFLY can teach you how to fly, and they sponsor local competitions for those who truly love the sport.

For others, the company offers individual and group flight packages for first-timers that include a training session, flight gear, instruction from a certified flight guide and a flight certificate.  If you’re a return flyer, the packages include everything but the training session and the flight certificate.

The activity is so safe that any healthy person from “3 to 103” years old can participate.  Of course, there are some restrictions based on weight and physical condition.  A parent or guardian must accompany flyers who are under 18, or supply a signed approval.   You can check out the guidelines or talk to the iFLY staff for more information.

What’s It Like to Fly?

Most people love the experience, especially since iFLY has the whole process down to a science.  First-time flyers attend “flight training” where instructors teach proper body position and the hand signals you will use during your flight.  Once you’ve donned your helmet, suit and goggles, you go to the flight chamber where the instructor will stay with you as you soar.

During the flight, you’re actually flying.  The wind comes from the bottom of the tunnel and as you enter the chamber, a smooth cushion of air lifts you up.  You can float, turn, tumble, fly three feet off the ground or 40 feet in the air.  It’s your choice.  Take a look as Todd Tongen from Channel 10 News tries it out (sorry for the ad).

You Can Schedule Events at iFLY

If you want your friends, family or coworkers to be blown away too, schedule an event at iFLY.  They will host birthday parties or other personal celebrations, corporate and fundraising events and even bachelor or bachelorette parties.

iFLY has a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education program that is tailored for elementary, middle school, high school and college groups.  Students experience an exciting and relevant educational experience that includes presentation and lab activities followed by a flight in the vertical wind tunnel.

A place to go indoor skydiving is another reason why I love where I live – there are always more things to do in Davie.  If you need assistance with a real estate transaction in the Davie area, the Teri Arbogast team consists of Davie REALTORS® who provide professional and knowledgeable assistance.  Call us today at 954-242-8030 or contact us online.

Or, maybe I’ll see you over at iFLY.  It looks like so much fun, I just might give it a try!
